When the General Motors Tonawanda Forge Facility began production in 1954, all the workers were members of the UAW. The die sinkers endured an eight year apprentice-ship. We felt the UAW, who was almost entirely production workers, weren’t right for us. We decided we needed a Union that would address our special skills and would ensure we were properly compensated for those skills. We petitioned the NLRB to split from the UAW and won. On May 1, 1955 we received our charter from the International Die Sinkers Conference (IDSC) and Local Lodge DS 490 was born. The IDSC became our union for the next 32 years before merging with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Still to this day though we work side by side with our UAW brothers and sisters in what is now American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. Tonawanda Forge, Tonawanda, N.Y.
